The Protocol establishes a new emblem for the Geneva Conventions, commonly referred to as the red crystal, for use alongside the red cross and the red crescent. The Protocol calls for states to adopt the third emblem, which can be used as a protective symbol in armed conflicts where neither the red cross nor red crescent would be seen as neutral.
