Protocol V is aimed at addressing the very serious post-conflict humanitarian problems caused by ERW. Protocol V places on parties to a conflict a legal obligation to take remedial measures to minimise the risks and effects of Explosive Remnants of War. In the long term Protocol V may act as an incentive to improve the reliability of munitions to prevent them from becoming Explosive Remnants of War.
