In its current form, the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) requires Parties to implement measures to ensure the safe transportation of nuclear material. Following the events of 11 September 2001, States Parties to the CPPNM agreed to improve the CPPNM by extending its scope to cover the physical protection of nuclear facilities and domestic transport, storage and use of nuclear material, thereby strengthening the global nuclear security regime.
