The Agreement provides for the two countries to assist each other in the administration and enforcement of tax laws through the exchange of tax related information.

The agreement was signed on 1 April 2016. The agreement completed Parliamentary treaty examination (by the Finance and Expenditure Committee) on 16 February 2017.  The Committee's report noted that it had no matters to bring to the attention of the House.  An Order in Council to give the treaty the force of law in New Zealand was made on Monday 7 August 2017, gazetted on 10 August 2017, and entered into force on 7 September 2017.

The exchange of diplomatic notes to bring the agreement into force was completed on 8 September.
