Updating the 1987 New Zealand-Canada co-production agreement to account for changes in Canada's policy to co-production agreements.
Film co-production agreements allow approved film and television projects to gain the status of ‘official co-productions’. This status entitles a co-production film or television project to the benefits accorded to national films and television programmes in each of the co-producers’ countries. An example of such benefits is access to funding and incentives within the existing legislation of each country. It is also common for the agreements to include provision for three way co-productions, if one of the countries entering the agreement has an existing treaty with the third country.
The primary change from the previous co-production agreement is a proposal that official New Zealand-Canada co-productions be permitted to employ certain key staff from a third country, not party to the agreement. In all of New Zealand’s other co-production agreements, all key staff must be from countries that have recognised the production as an official co-production.
