The Agreement aims to promote, coordinate and implement cooperative research, development and training projects for the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology. Upon its entry into force, the Agreement will replace the 1987 Regional Cooperative Agreement and removes the requirement to agree and ratify future extensions. New Zealand joined the 1987 Agreement in 1994, but its membership lapsed in 2002. New Zealand scientists have remained engaged in activities under the 1987 Agreement (and subsequent extensions) on an informal basis. The 2017 Agreement provides the opportunity to reinstate New Zealand’s membership. New Zealand participated in discussions on the 2017 Extension of the Agreement and requested that the extension be made permanent. A permanent extension was adopted and is now open for acceptance.
