The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons builds on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and establishes a comprehensive prohibition on nuclear weapons.  It prohibits the use and threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as their development, testing, production, manufacture, acquisition, possession, stockpiling, transfer and receipt.  It also prohibits the provision of assistance, encouragement or inducement to engage in any of the prohibited activities, and prohibits States Parties from allowing any stationing, installation or deployment of nuclear weapons on their territory.

New Zealand ratified the treaty by publishing its instrument of ratification with the Secretary General of the United Nations on 31 July 2018.
