Treaty Summary:

The Hague Convention of 23 November 2007 on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance and the Hague Protocol of 23 November 2007 on the Law Applicable to Maintenance Obligations seek to establish a modern, efficient and accessible international system for the cross-border recovery of child support and other forms of family maintenance. It is intended to provide for international judicial and administrative cooperation in the recovery of child support and other forms of family maintenance.

Ratifying the Convention provides New Zealand with more options to ensure the collection of financial support for children.

It replaces the Commonwealth Scheme and the United Nations Convention on the Recovery Abroad of Maintenance as it applies to both countries.  New Zealand also has an existing Reciprocal Agreement with Australia for enforcement of child support obligations in both countries which could continue in some form.
