The treaty details the terms upon which citizens of the Republic of Lithuania and citizens of New Zealand can share knowledge and cultural experiences through a holiday of up to 12 months.
The main rights and obligations of the Agreement are:
- Temporary WHS visas will be issued to citizens of New Zealand and Lithuania aged between 18 and 30 years for a visit of up to twelve months;
- Working Holiday Scheme (WHS) participants’ primary intention will be to holiday in the country, with work and study being incidental to the visit;
- Host country employment conditions will apply in both cases;
- WHS participants will not be permitted to engage in employment with the same employer for more than six months during their stay; and
- WHS participants will be permitted to study for up to six months during their stay.
The Working Holiday Scheme Agreement aims to facilitate further people-to-people connections and cross-cultural understanding between the youth of New Zealand and Lithuania.
Negotiations for a Working Holiday Scheme Agreement were launched between New Zealand and Lithaunia in March 2006 during the the visit of then-President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus. The Agreement was signed on 1 October 2015 in New York in the margins of the United Nations Leader's Week.
This Agreement was suspended via Third Person Note on 26 April 2021.
